Why do I have to frequently urinate?

On average, a person urinates 6-7 times during a day. But many people have the problem of frequent urination, medically known as frequency. A person who urinates more than 3 liters in 24 hours, has a condition called polyuria, which can indicate a more serious problem. Early identification of the condition can lead to timely treatment.

It should be noted that urinary frequency is not the same as urinary incontinence which refers to a person having little to no control over their bladder. When we talk about urinary frequency problem, we talk about a person having to pee a lot during the day. Frequent urination can be caused by different conditions. These conditions vary depending on your age, gender, and other underlying medical conditions.

Bladder Problems:

The most common cause of urinary frequency is urinary tract and bladder infection (UTI). During a UTI, an infection enters the body and causes inflammation in the urinary system. The urinary system is made up of kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Other reasons may include interstitial cystitis and overactive bladder syndrome which are not infectious causes.

Diabetes:

A very common symptom of diabetes (both type 1 and 2) is frequent urination. The reason for this is that when you have diabetes, your body can’t control the amount of sugar in the blood circulating in your body. When the blood sugar goes up, it gets excreted by the kidneys, and due to the osmotic pressure of the sugar, water excretion is also increased by the kidney, thus giving you increased urination. The more water that leaves your body, the more you feel dehydrated and drink more, thus continuing the cycle caused by this uncontrolled high blood sugar problem. The treatment is diabetic medications to control the sugar levels in your blood.

Pregnancy:

When a woman is pregnant, her bladder gets squished as the baby grows, and takes more and more space in the body. Therefore, frequent urination is a common problem during pregnancy. According to studies, this symptom is more frequent during the first and third trimesters as in the second, the uterus is higher in the body, not exerting as much pressure on your bladder. The issue of frequent urination goes away in weeks after childbirth as your body returns to its “non-pregnant” state.

Prostate Problem:

As men get older, their prostate gets larger, which does not allow the bladder to empty easily. This incomplete emptying of the bladder then leads to more frequent trips to the bathroom. Prostate enlargement is a condition very common in men and is treatable with medications.

Stroke:

Neurological problems like a stroke or Parkinson’s disease can cause damage to the nerves that are responsible for controlling the bladder’s filling and emptying. This can cause bladder problems, including the urge to urinate frequently.

The Takeaway:

There can be many more causes of frequent urination including anxiety disorder, bladder stones, excessive consumption of fluids, etc. To find the cause of the problem, your doctor will perform a physical examination, take your medical history and then advise you on next steps.
